1046 hours. The Brentwood Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a structure fire at 9 Cleveland Avenue off Pine Aire Drive. Units arrived to find a trailer, multiple vehicles burning, piles of debris burning and fire extending to a commercial building. While units stretched on the fires, a request for an immediate response from PSEG was put in, as down and live power lines were impeding the operation. The Islip Town haz-mat team was requested due to chemicals burning within the trailer. Islip Terrace sent a ladder to the scene, Bayshore sent a ladder to the scene, Islip FD sent an engine to Brentwood’s headquarters to cover, and the Hauppauge FD sent a ladder to standby. As you will see from the next story, the standby companies caught a house fire as well. Once the fire was extinguished, the haz-mat team identified, contained and neutralized the chemicals. The Suffolk County Decon Strike team responded to support the haz-mat team, as did ambulances from Brentwood Legion, East Islip FD EMS, Bay Shore-Brightwaters and Dix Hills FD. Islip Exchange Ambulance sent their Special Operations/Rehab unit.
The Brentwood Fire District Fire Marshal, the Islip Town Fire Marshals and Suffolk Police Arson Detectives were all on scene.
3 firefighters suffered minor injuries.
All fire and EMS units cleared the scene at approximately 1600 hours.
