Commercial building fire in Ronkonkoma

0510 hours. Ronkonkoma Fire Department responds to 239 Hawkins Avenue for an activated fire alarm. Units arrive and find smoke pushing from a single story commercial building. The alarm is re-toned as a structure fire and the mutual aid plan is initiated, bringing in the Lakeland, Nesconset and Holtsville Fire Departments. Crews forced entry, stretched two lines and after a search, located and extinguished the fire in the basement. There were no injuries. St. James Fire Department sent an engine to cover for Ronkonkoma for the duration.

Fire Marshals from the Town of Brookhaven are handling the investigation.

Heavy rescue on the Sunken Meadow Parkway

0849 hours. The Kings Park Fire Department is dispatched to a traffic collision on the Sunken Meadow Parkway. Units find the crash on the southbound side near the eastbound Pulaski Road exit. Both patients were extricated and the Chief placed the incident under control at 917. Mutual aid ambulances from East Northport and Commack Ambulance were requested.

Multi Agency water search in Stony Brook

2221 Hours. The Stony Brook Fire Department responds with the Town of Smithtown Department of Public Safety to Stony Brook Harbor in regards to a reported flare sighting. Additional boats were requested from the St. James, Setauket and Port Jefferson Fire Departments as well as Suffolk Police, Head of the Harbor Police and the US Coast Guard. The area was searched by boat and by air for over an hour with no results.  All units cleared from the scene by 2330 hours.

Dump truck overturns in Nesconset

1935 hours. Nesconset Fire Department responds to a report of a traffic collision at 15 Chestnut Street off Smithtown Blvd. Units arrive to find that a dump truck has overturned at a construction site. The occupant had self extricated and denied being injured. FD personnel secured the vehicle and turned the scene over to Suffolk Police.

Second job of the day for Ronkonkoma

2006 hours. Ronkonkoma, Farmingville and Nesconset FDs are dispatched to a reported house on fire at 205 Avenue A in the Ronkonkoma Fire District. Ronkonkoma units were first in and advised of an active fire in a vehicle within a garage. Two lines were stretched and the fire was quickly extinguished before extending into the living area. There were no injuries and the Town of Brookhaven Fire Marshals are handling the cause investigation.

Propane leak in St. James

1045 hours. St. James Fire Department responds to a report of an outside gas leak on Emmet Way in Head of the Harbor. FD units arrived to find that a tree came down and landed on the valve assembly for a buried tank resulting in a leak and damaging the shutoff valve.

Assistant Chief Mills requested a response from the contracted LP gas provider and a line was stretched and operated, dispersing the gas vapors. Crews monitored the atmospheric conditions in the area and the Smithtown Fire Marshals Office put Islip Town Haz-Mat on stand by in case a burn off was necessary. FD personnel were able to stop the leak and then stood by, monitoring until Paraco gas arrived. Units from St. James, Stony Brook and Nesconset Fire Department operated on scene until approximately 1300 hours.

House destroyed by early morning fire in Ronkonkoma

Ronkonkoma, Nesconset and Farmingville Fire Departments were dispatched to a house fire at 90 Dorchester Road in the Ronkonkoma Fire District. Arriving units encountered heavy fire throughout the two story private dwelling. While crews stretched in, additional mutual aid was requested from Centereach for an engine to the scene and St. James FD to cover. Crews spent four hours fighting the fire and the house was a total loss. One occupant was transported to the hospital via ambulance. Brookhaven Town Fire Marshals and Suffolk Police Arson Squad Detectives. Suffolk Fire Marshals K-9 Section was also called in. Click on the photo below for video from the scene.

Crash with overturn in St. James

1950 hours. St. James FD is dispatched to a traffic collision in the intersection of Woodlawn Avenue and Jefferson Ave. As this is right in front of Station 1, units were on scene almost immediately. The crash involved two vehicles, one of which overturned. All of the occupants self extricated and refused medical attention. FD personnel secured both vehicles and turned the scene over to SCPD. 3rd Assistant Chief John Gonzales was the OIC and operated with Rescue 9, Engines 1,3, ladder 7 and both ambulances.

Yet another wreck on the LIE in Hauppauge

1497 hours. The Hauppauge Fire Department responds to a traffic collision on the Long Island Expressway. Units arrive and find that a vehicle left the roadway, striking a tree on the westbound side between exits 56 and 57. The lone occupant self extricated prior to the arrival of the FD and Central Islip Hauppauge Ambulance. FD personnel secured the vehicle and CIHVAC members transported the subject to Southside Hospital with minor injuries.

Vehicle driven through front of building in Setauket

The Setauket Fire Department responds to a report of a traffic collision on Main Street. Units arrive to find that a vehicle had been driven through the front of Via Pizza and Pasta at 205 Main Street. Damage was significant but the driver was not seriously injured. FD personnel secured the vehicle and assessed the damage, requesting a response from the Town of Brookhaven Building Department. FD/EMS personnel handled patient care. Stringer News Photos.

Vehicle crash with fire in Ronkonkoma

Ronkonkoma FD responds to a traffic collision on Portion Road near Holbrook Road. Units arrive to find that a truck left the roadway, striking a concrete light pole, but not before bringing down a utility pole and wires in front of CVS. Thankfully, the occupant of the vehicle self extricated as the crash resulted in a fire that destroyed the Chevy pickup truck.  FD units stood fast until PSEG arrived and confirmed that power was removed from the wires. At that point the fire was extinguished. EMS handled patient care. The road was not reopened until some time later in the day to the the extensive cleanup and repairs by PSEG.

Serious crash at Veterans Highway and Motor Parkway in Hauppauge

Hauppauge Fire Department and Central Islip Hauppauge Ambulance respond to Motor Parkway and Veterans Highway in regards to a traffic collision. Units arrived to find a crash involving two vehicles. While there was no pin, both operators sustained serious injuries. All were transported via ambulance.

House fire in Stony Brook

1326 hours. Stony Brook Fire Department responds to a report of a house fire at 12 Meadow Drive. Units arrived within a minute and advised of an active fire on the exterior of a converted garage with extension into the attic space. Lines were stretched and mutual aid was requested from Setauket for a ladder, engine and ambulance, Centereach for a ladder and St. James FD for a ladder and RIT. The fire was confined to the garage and command placed fire fire under control at 1355. All units cleared the scene at 1450 hours. Fire Marshals from the Town of Brookhaven are handling the investigation.

Traffic Collision with heavy rescue on Main Street in Smithtown

1037 hours. The Smithtown Fire Department responds to a traffic collision in front of 260 East Main Street near Plaza Drive. Units arrive to find a multi-vehicle crash with the occupant of one vehicle trapped inside. Assistant Chief Fitzpatrick had the alarm re-toned as a heavy rescue bringing 4-2-9 to the scene for a door pop. All of the victims were packaged and transported via Smithtown FD ambulances to the hospital.  While returning from this alarm, Smithtown FD units came upon another collision on Main Street at Landing Avenue. This was a truck vs. utility pole. There was no PIN and the occupant was transported via Nesconset FD ambulance.

Crash involving motorcycle on the LIE in Hauppauge

2253 hours. The Hauppauge Fire Department and Central Islip Hauppauge Ambulance are dispatched to a report of a traffic collision on the Long Island Expressway. Arriving units find a crash involving a seriously injured motorcyclist in the eastbound lanes between exits 56 and 57.  The motorcyclist was transported via police helicopter from the scene to Stony Brook Hospital. The LIE was closed eastbound for quite some time for the police investigation.

Fatal Traffic Collision in Commack

Commack FD and Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corp handled this crash.

From SCPD Press Release 18-501698. Suffolk County Police Second Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that killed a woman in Commack.
 
Conor Travaglione was driving a 2011 Honda northbound on Commack Road when his vehicle struck a 2016 Volvo traveling westbound on Express Drive North at approximately 11:55 p.m. on August 30.
 
A 78-year-old female passenger in the Volvo was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip where she died from injuries sustained in the crash. The woman’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
 
The driver of the Volvo, Mijoung Lim, 50, of Holtsville and another female passenger in the vehicle were transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment of minor injuries. Travaglione, 17, of East Northport was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
 
Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the Second Squad at 631-854-8252 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.

Fire Sprinkler System extinguishes fire at LA Fitness in Lake Grove

2354 hours. Centereach Fire Department is dispatched to an automatic fire alarm at 110 New Moriches Road. Units arrive to find an active fire alarm and water flowing. Crews search the building and find that the fire sprinkler system had extinguished a fire in the building. The system was shutdown, the building vented and the area overhauled then secured for the Fire Marshal.

The Lake Grove Fire Marshal responded to the scene to handle the investigation and to perform a full life safety inspection. The gym was shut down until the fire protection systems were restored.  There were no injuries and damage was minimal thanks to the sprinkler system.

Nesconset and Ronkonkoma FD's assist Lakeland at house fire.

0130 hours. Lakeland Fire Department responds to a report of a house fire at 125 West 1st Street. Units arrive and find an active fire within a private dwelling. Crews stretch on the fire and mutual aid is requested for a RIT from Nesconset and an engine from Ronkonkoma. The fire was quickly extinguished. Nesconset was cancelled while en-route. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Bicylist seriously injured in Nesconset crash

1143 hours. Shortly after the Kings Park Fire Department took up from their traffic collision on Pulaski Road, the Nesconset Fire Department was dispatched to a traffic collision on Smithtown Blvd near Southern Blvd. Units arrived to find that a 16 year old male on a bicycle  had collided with an SUV. The youth suffered a serious head injury and was quickly stabilized and transported by Nesconset FD to Stony Brook Hospital. The driver of the SUV was not injured. Smithtown Boulevard was shut down until after 3PM while police conducted their investigation.

Cyclist seriously injured in Kings Park

1045 hours. Kings Park Fire Department is dispatched to a report of a traffic collision on Pulaski Road near Avenue A. Units arrived to find that a adult male who had been riding a bicycle struck the side of a van, resulting in serious injuries. The victim was transported via ambulance to Stony Brook Hospital. The vehicle operator was not injured. Pulaski Road remained closed for a few hours for the police investigation.
