Haz-Mat in the Hauppauge Industrial Park

Posted 7/2/2018

Hauppauge Fire Department responds to a truck leaking fuel on Arkay Drive. Units arrive to find that a tractor trailer struck a manhole cover which tore a hole in the drivers side fuel tank. The driver pulled over and called 911 while approximately 130 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the roadway and down into the sewer system. FD personnel stopped the leak at the tank and shut down the fuel supply. Speedy dry was applied to the roadway and a sander was brought in from the Town of Smithtown Highway Department to cover the road with dirt. A Fire Marshal from the Town of Smithtown Department of Public Safety was called to the scene to handle the spill. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation was also called in. Suffolk County Police Department Motor Carrier Safety Section came to the scene to inspect the truck.

The sewer system in the industrial park is a common positive system that is interconnected and dumps out into a sump on Motor Parkway. The leaking fuel traveled throughout the system and spilled out into the sump which is approximately one mile away from the incident location.

The DEC worked with the Town and with an authorized contractor brought in by the trucking company to mitigate the spill by scrubbing the roadway, pumping out the sewers and recovering the contaminated rocks and soil from within the sump. The sewer system was then flushed using fire hydrants.

Over 120 yards of contaminated soil was removed along with thousands of gallons of contaminated water. When the incident was over 36 hours later, the area was clean and no trace of fuel remained. A great job by all of the agencies involved.
